City Council Minutes October 16, 2006

Ms. Carol Lee, 6320 119th Avenue East, Puyallup, said she had talked with Mary Jo Holland, the lead in

the petition for annexation, and was told that Ms. Holland started the petition campaign to “keep the plug

from being pulled” on the provision of services by the city. Ms. Lee felt that Ms. Holland had a conflict

of interest as it was her understanding that Ms. Holland was married to a retired City of Puyallup

firefighter who was paid a pension by the city. Ms. Lee asked that the city admit that the residents of the

area had been treated unfairly and stated that the residents were deserving of hearing the truth about what

the impacts and repercussions of annexation.

Mayor Deal rhetorically asked why the residents would expect the city to provide services for an area

outside the city limits. Services are not normally offered to residents outside the city and he questioned

why the North Puyallup area residents felt Puyallup should continue to offer fire services to a portion of

unincorporated Pierce County.
